Preston to Puerto Rico

2019-2020 will be our first year implementing this program. Students in this program will take a service learnign course offered at Preston Middle School. Students will participate in local service projects determined by the needs of the school and surrounding community throughout the year. Students will also “plug in” to service projects led by our students in other GL programs. During spring break, participants have the opportunity to spend 9 days helping in hurricane relief efforts. They will work alongside Puerto Rican students to construct an Earthship education and refuge center. Earthships are completely self-sustainable and are made from waste materials. When hurricanes hit, these structures can provide food, water, power, and shelter for those in need, helping Puerto Rico become more self-reliant. The structures also address the growing levels of garbage on the island by incorporating them into the structures themselves.

Students can expect to learn about sustainability, the philosophies of Earthship construction, sustainable agriculture, soil erosion carbon footprint, improve Spanish language, and be immersed in a new culture during their time in Puerto Rico.
